The Local Lotto has celebrated its eighth birthday, with more than £38,000 now raised each year for good causes across the Harrogate district.
Mayor Councillor Viv Poskitt visited Community House yesterday (Wednesday 30th September) to meet charities and community organisations benefiting from the scheme.
The visit formed part of Local Lotto Week, organised by Harrogate and District Community Action (HADCA), which helped local organisations find out more about the fundraising opportunity.
More than 100 community organisations now take part in The Local Lotto, which was launched by the former Harrogate Borough Council eight years ago.
Tickets cost £1 a week, with 60p from every ticket going directly to local good causes. Players can choose an organisation to support while having the chance to win cash prizes, including a £25,000 jackpot.
Those without a particular cause in mind can support The Local Fund, which provides grants to community organisations addressing local needs.
During her visit, the Mayor spoke with Rachel Gregory from Open Country about how the lottery provides much-needed funding for the charity.
Open Country helps disabled people access and enjoy the countryside through outdoor activities, advice, training and countryside access projects.
Councillor Viv Poskitt said:
“It was wonderful to visit the team at HADCA and hear about the positive difference funding from The Local Lotto makes to local organisations like Open Country.
“Supporting local good causes is a fantastic way for our community to come together, helping to make every pound count and supporting the important work happening across our area.”
Anna Glazier, Co-ordinator at HADCA, said:
“It was fantastic to welcome the Mayor to Community House and to celebrate eight years of The Local Lotto with local charities and community organisations.
“The Local Lotto is a simple way for people to support causes close to home while having the chance to win a prize. Every £1 ticket can contribute to the important work being carried out across our communities.
“The Local Lotto Week also gave us a great opportunity to meet local organisations and offer them advice on how to make the most of this fundraising opportunity.”
HADCA is encouraging participating organisations to use the free promotional resources available and share their Local Lotto pages with supporters.
It works alongside lottery platform provider Gatherwell to offer fundraising resources and ongoing support.
Organisations interested in joining can contact HADCA to find out how the scheme could help them generate regular, unrestricted income.
