Harrogate pupils uncover school's past as Victorian hospital

Children at St Peter's CE Primary School in Harrogate have been exploring their classrooms' former life as hospital wards.

Pupils at the Belford Road school have started the new school year with a Victorian history project, using historical maps, documents and local archives to uncover the building’s past.

Their research, including information gathered from Harrogate Library, has helped them piece together how the site changed from a place of medical care into a school.

The project has also taken children beyond the school gates to explore nearby Victorian landmarks, including the historic almshouses opposite.

St Peter’s maintains a connection with residents today, with the whole school coming together each year to sing Christmas carols.

Headteacher Mr Griffiths said:

“It is wonderful to see our children connecting so deeply with the heritage of Harrogate.

"Knowing that their classrooms once served as a Victorian hospital gives them a tangible, remarkable link to the past.

“History isn't just something in a textbook for them; it's the very foundation of where they learn and grow today.”

The school has recently upgraded its library and playground and provides dedicated wellbeing spaces, alongside wraparound care and holiday clubs available 50 weeks a year.

Families considering Reception places for September 2027 are being invited to book personalised tours with Mr Griffiths to explore the building and find out more about school life.
