Poets will take centre stage across Ripon on Thursday (1st October) as the city celebrates National Poetry Day.
A series of performances and activities will be held throughout the day, beginning at the Workhouse Museum on Allhallowgate from 11am until 12noon.
Poetry readings will then take place inside Ripon Cathedral between 2pm and 4pm, before an open mic evening at Claro Lounge on Market Place South from 7.30pm.
Local authors and award-winning poets will be among those performing across the three venues.
The celebrations follow eight years of Ripon Poetry Festival, which previously brought visiting poets, competitions, open mic nights and school residencies to the city.
Katie Scott, Director of Ripon Theatre Festival, said:
“Although there is no formal poetry festival this year, Thursday’s National Poetry Day will still be marked and celebrated, thanks to Ripon Poets.”
Ripon Theatre Festival has included poetry and spoken word since it began, and organisers are keen for literary events to continue to grow in the city.
Katie added:
“Members of our team will be attending the National Poetry Day events and meeting other poetry lovers, bookworms and word junkies.
“All interested parties are welcome to come along to the performances and share their ideas for future events and activities that celebrate the spoken and written word.”
