Harrogate adult learners prove it's never too late to achieve GCSE success

Adult learners who returned to education alongside work and family commitments are celebrating their GCSE results at Harrogate College.

Among them are 55-year-old healthcare assistant Neil Thompson and 39-year-old mum Basma Elshobaky, who both enrolled at the college to gain qualifications that will help them pursue new careers.

Neil studied GCSE English while working as a Healthcare Assistant at Harrogate District Hospital.

Originally from South Africa, he discovered his previous English qualifications were not equivalent to a GCSE and returned to education as part of his long-term ambition to become a nurse.

He said:

“The face-to-face learning experience, engaging lessons and tailored support from my tutor made a huge difference, helping me build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed.”

Neil's studies came alongside national recognition for his work, having received the NHS England Chief Nursing Award for his contribution to supporting colleagues.

Basma returned to education while looking after a young family and achieved a Grade 8 in GCSE English and a Grade 6 in maths.

She now plans to continue her studies with the ambition of becoming a maths teacher.

Basma said:

“The support and encouragement from my tutors and the wider college staff played a huge part in helping me succeed, while meeting new people and making friends made my experience even more rewarding.”

Harrogate College also saw young people receive their GCSE English and maths results after retaking the subjects alongside their main courses.

Debbie Redman, Programme Manager at Harrogate College, said: “I’m proud of our students and what they’ve achieved. Many study GCSEs alongside work and other personal commitments which makes their success all the more rewarding.”
