Harrogate Homeless Project has welcomed a £547,000 funding package aimed at improving support for rough sleepers in the district.

The funding will be provided over three years as part of the government's extended Ending Homelessness in Communities Fund (EHCF).

It will support a range of local services, including improvements to accommodation and facilities operated by Harrogate Homeless Project (HHP).

Planned work includes replacement bathrooms and storage areas at the charity's hostel, as well as improvements to facilities at its Springboard day centre.

Funding will also be provided for targeted drug and alcohol support and help with everyday living skills, including cooking and budgeting.

Richard Cooper, Chief Executive of Harrogate Homeless Project, said:

“This is significant investment that helps our charity provide the onsite services needed by those we support.

“Taken alongside national announcements today, it is an enormous sign of commitment to the Prime Minister’s stated aim of eliminating rough sleeping.

“It means we can make big progress towards supporting more of those who are ready to take the first steps back to long-term independent accommodation. I thank the Prime Minister for taking this truly significant step."

Money will also be available to help people overcome barriers to independent living, including providing furniture and covering furnishing costs.

He added:

“Over our 35-year history we have helped hundreds of people from the streets into work, a house and a new life. Now we can do so much more.

“But it isn’t the end. There are more services we need to provide. There are services we need to provide more intensively. There are services we need to provide over a longer time.

“The UK is on a journey to provide amazing wraparound services for rough sleepers and Harrogate Homeless Project is grateful to be a partner with the Government on that journey.”
