Former Harrogate Town favourite Joe Leesley has announced his retirement from football.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Town after joining the club from Alfreton Town in 2016.

Joe went on to score 34 goals and 71 assists in 148 appearances and played a key role in the club's rise through the divisions.

His standout campaign came in 2017/18 when he helped Harrogate secure promotion from National League North.

He was named National League North Player of the Season after scoring 22 goals and contributing 25 assists.

Joe was also part of the Town side that secured promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history in 2020.

He later had spells with Boston United, Darlington, Kidderminster Harriers, Scunthorpe United and Worksop Town.

Announcing his retirement, Joe said:

"Football has given me more than I could ever have asked for - memories, experiences, achievements, friendships and people who will be part of my life forever.

"I leave the game with no regrets, just an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude."

He also reflected fondly on his time in Harrogate.

He said:

“I loved my time at the club more than people will know.

"It’s a club full of proper people that I’ll never forget.”

Harrogate Town also paid tribute to their former player.

A club spokesperson said:

“Congrats on an incredible career Joe and all the best for the future.”
