The MP for Ripon and Skipton has spoken following the announcement that Burnsall Park has closed to the public after more than 70 years.
The Daggett family, owners of Wharfe House Car Park, confirmed this week that the popular visitor site has shut, citing "changes to the business environment" and growing challenges.
Reacting to the news, MP Julian Smith said it was important that authorities continue to protect areas such as Burnsall while ensuring people can continue to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales.
He said:
"Maintaining a safe and sustainable National Park is just as important as encouraging people to enjoy and visit it, and I hope the Park Authority will work closely with Burnsall Parish Meeting to achieve that balance.
"I have had positive discussions with both North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Council, and I am confident that they stand ready to support the Park Authority in fulfilling its responsibilities to protect local residents and ensure public safety."
The Daggett family said the decision to close Burnsall Park had been made "with heavy hearts."
The family has also confirmed security measures are now in place to prevent trespassing and has asked people to use the nearby Dales Way public footpath instead of entering the site.
In a statement, they said:
"After over seven decades of service as a cherished local and tourist spot, Burnsall Park will permanently close its gates to the public.
"While we've loved being part of so many summer memories over the years, recent changes in the business environment and growing challenges have led us to this point."
The closure follows a tragic incident at Burnsall in May, when 13-year-old Palwasha Akbar died after getting into difficulty in the nearby River Wharfe.
Her death prompted renewed calls for greater water safety awareness and discussions around visitor management at the popular beauty spot.
