Site manager wins housebuilding 'Oscar' for Harrogate development

Seal of Excellence Award winner Paul Douglass.

A site manager at a Harrogate housing development has won a national award recognising excellence in housebuilding.

Paul Douglass, 55, has received a Seal of Excellence Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC) for his work at Redrow’s Kingsley Manor development on Kingsley Road.

The award forms part of the annual Pride in the Job competition, often described as the ‘Oscars’ of the housebuilding industry.

Paul, who has worked for Redrow for nine years, received a Pride in the Job Quality Award earlier this year before progressing to the next stage.

He said:

“I am elated; I honestly never expected to win this award, especially as the development is nearing the end of completion.

“But it shows the top level of work that is continuing through the building process, how the team is storing materials, working safely and the quality of our homes, and that’s obviously what the judges saw.”

Paul has spent 40 years in the housebuilding industry, having started as a labourer aged 15.

He progressed through roles as an apprentice joiner, site joiner and assistant site manager before becoming a site manager.

He has overseen Kingsley Manor since 2022, having previously worked on Redrow developments in Swanland, Green Hammerton and York.

Paul, who lives in York with his wife Debbie and stepchildren Leah and Josh, credited his colleagues and family for their support.

He said:

“I’d like to thank all the team at Kingsley Manor, to all the trades, contractors and labourers you are all fantastic.

“I’d also like to thank my past assistant site managers Freddy Rahal and Matt Sparkes and now Josh Aiken who has picked up the baton and definitely ran with it! This award is a team effort so thank you to everyone working Kingsley Manor.

“And finally a big thanks to my wife Debbie, I couldn’t do any of this without her.”

Judges assess site managers on criteria including consistency, attention to detail, leadership, technical expertise and health and safety.

John Handley, managing director at Redrow Yorkshire, said: “Congratulations to Paul and the team at Kingsley Manor. These awards showcase what it takes to be a top site manager and demonstrate our long-term commitment to looking after our customers.”

Kingsley Manor will feature 133 homes once complete.

The development covers 20.3 acres and includes green space, two play areas and cycle and footpaths linking to neighbouring developments, local facilities and the town centre.
