A Ready Steady Cook-themed competition has raised more than £6,150 for a children’s cancer charity.
The event, which was held at Leeds City College, was hosted by celebrity chef and presenter Briony May Williams, who appeared on Channel 4's Great British Bake Off.
It saw 12 teams of two put their culinary skills to the test, including a team from Harrogate-based events company Impulse Decisions.
The competition was fundraising for Candlelighters - a charity that provides emotional, practical and financial support for families of children with cancer.
Whilst they didn’t win, Dannielle Perks from Impulse Decisions said:
“I just want to say a massive thank you for being invited to participate in a fun afternoon for such a great cause.
“The whole Candlelighters team along with the host, Briony, made it such an exciting event that was seamless, engaging and let us get creative in the kitchen... without having to clean up the mess!”
Each team was challenged with cooking a main course and a pudding using ingredients provided by Company Shop Group, the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food.
The teams each had 30 minutes to discuss their plans and choose their ingredients from the pantry before beginning to cook.
Danielle added:
“Big shout out to the staff and students who jumped in to help us navigate round the kitchens and gave us some cheeky cooking tips along the way!
“Candlelighters are a great charity that we enjoy working with and supporting.”
Sustainability was a key theme of the event as the UK throws away over 9.5 million tonnes of food waste in a single year, even though 8.4 million people in the UK are in food poverty.
Food insecurity is something that Candlelighters see regularly, with families on the cusp of food poverty accessing foodbanks and sometimes being turned away because they can only visit so many times.
Sue Patterson, who is a trustee of Candlelighters, said:
“It was a brilliant event, and we are grateful for all of the companies and people who supported it.
“The money raised will help Candlelighters to continue to provide grants and support our families across Yorkshire.
“Due to its popularity we are looking at a date for 2025 which is amazing!"
