Harrogate Town has announced that fan favourite George Thomson has signed a new one-year contract with the club.
This new deal sees George sign on for the 2026/27 season - a tenth season with the club, during which time he made 335 appearances and scored more than 50 goals.
The 34-year-old was a key player in our promotions to the National League and Football League in 2018 and 2020 respectively, and was also a member of our FA Trophy-winning side in 2021.
George said:
“I’m delighted to be sorted before pre-season starts.
“It’s nice to get it sorted. It’s always nice when it’s all done and you don’t have to think about it.
“Obviously, it’s been a different summer. It’s been a while since I’ve been out of contract in the summer, so it’s been a bit different.”
George arrived at the club in 2017 and admits his nine years at the club means it has a special place in his heart.
“Obviously the club means a great deal to me. You don’t spend this long somewhere and don’t care about it.
“It’s crazy to think of it as that long. It’s been some journey. Plenty of highs and obviously last year which not great in terms of the end result.
"But I suppose it gives us the opportunity now to do something about it and hopefully bounce back at the first opportunity.”
George made 15 appearances last season after returning to action on New Year’s Day this year following an 18-month injury lay-off and is keen to make up for lost time.
He added:
“I’ve said it before in the interviews when I first came back, there were times when I didn’t think I’d play again.
“So be to sat here looking at a fresh new start for me personally, I think that’s how I’m viewing it. Last preseason I wasn’t fit, I wasn’t ready to go and ended up having another op and all that came with it.
“Now I feel ready to go and hopefully I can get a full preseason under my belt and be in good shape going into the season.”
Town’s Head of Recruitment Lloyd Kerry also spoke of his delight at seeing his former team-mate sign up for the new campaign.
Lloyd said:
“He’s obviously a legend at the club. A proper model pro. I think it's important now, obviously, with his injury, that he can really have a good crack at it.
“I think he'll come out fighting and I think he'll be keen to get back playing and play a big part next season.
“It's going to be his tenth season next year for the club and he's been really loyal to the club. And I think, like I say, he set the standards every day in training. And to have his leadership qualities around the group is really important.
“He's been an unbelievable player for this club, so hopefully, he can get back playing, get the games in, and get to the heights we know he can get to.”
