Harrogate students plant tree to honour Holocaust remembrance

Pupils and staff at St Aidans CE High School with the Tree of Remembrance.

Students at St Aidan's Church of England High School have planted a Tree of Remembrance and Hope following a Holocaust education project.

The ceremony was led by Year 12 students taking part in an educational project exploring the historical significance of Auschwitz and the importance of Holocaust education through the school's partnership with Harrogate International Partnership.

Students and staff gathered for the event to reflect on the importance of remembrance, education and the shared responsibility of building a more compassionate and understanding future.

The silver birch was chosen to represent renewal, resilience and hope, and will stand as a permanent reminder of the students' learning and the values at the heart of the project.

Headteacher Sian Dover said:

"This tree represents far more than a single moment.

"It stands as a living symbol of remembrance and of our commitment as a school community to learn from history and actively challenge discrimination in all its forms."

Students involved in the project also reflected on how their studies, including a school visit to Auschwitz, had deepened their understanding of the consequences of intolerance and the importance of standing up for others.

One Year 12 student said:

"Through this project, we have learned how important it is to remember the past and to treat everyone with kindness and respect."

As a Church of England school, St Aidan's said the ceremony reflects its commitment to promoting 'respect, compassion and responsibility.'
