Harrogate is set to get its first dedicated youth basketball club, giving young players the chance to play competitively without travelling to Leeds or York.
The new Harrogate Marshalls programme will become the junior section of Harrogate Raiders Basketball Club, offering structured coaching and competitive opportunities for boys and girls across the district.
The initiative has been launched in partnership with the long-established Harrogate Raiders, which was founded more than 20 years ago by St Aidan's Church of England High School teacher Gordon Meadows and currently runs men's and women's senior teams in the Leeds Basketball League.
The Marshalls will be led by former NBA and EuroLeague player Voise Winters, who enjoyed a 16-year professional career, including time with the Philadelphia 76ers and playing against basketball legend Michael Jordan.
Since joining Ashville College, Winters has helped establish one of Yorkshire's most successful school basketball programmes, with Ashville teams reaching the Jr. NBA League Finals twice and achieving success at regional and national level.
The club has been named in memory of the late Richard Marshall, former Headmaster of Ashville College, whose passion for basketball played a key role in developing the sport locally.
A former England age-group international, Marshall introduced basketball into the school's sporting curriculum and appointed Winters as Ashville's first basketball coach.
The first trial sessions will be held at Ashville Sports Centre on Sunday 5th July for boys and girls entering Years 7 to 13 in September 2026.
Sessions will run from 2pm for Years 7 and 8, 3.15pm for Years 9 and 10, and 4.30pm for Years 11 to 13.
The cost is £5 per player, payable on the day.
Players can register in advance online here. For further information, email harrogatemarshallsbasketball@gmail.com.
