North Yorkshire Police have paid tribute to an officer who was shot and killed near Harrogate 44 years ago today.

PC David Haigh died on 17 June 1982 after being shot at Norwood Plantation Edge, near Harrogate, while on duty.

He was sent to arrest a known petty criminal sleeping rough. Instead, he found a hardened criminal sleeping in his car, who fatally shot the officer on the side of the road.

Marking the anniversary, North Yorkshire Police shared a message of remembrance.

The force said:

"We remember PC David Haigh today.

"On 17 June 1982, PC Haigh was fatally shot by a man at Norwood Plantation Edge near Harrogate. In 2023, a memorial stone was unveiled at that location to honour him.

"We will always remember him."

PC Haigh's death prompted one of the largest manhunts in British policing history.

In September 2023, a memorial stone was unveiled at Norwood Plantation Edge to honour his service and sacrifice.

The memorial provides a permanent place for colleagues, family members and members of the public to remember the officer, who was killed while serving the community.

North Yorkshire Police continues to commemorate PC Haigh's life and service each year on the anniversary of his death.
