More than 1,000 people have taken part in Knaresborough's free town walking tours in their first year, with organisers celebrating the milestone this week.
Knaresborough Town Council launched The Mayor of Knaresborough's Town Walking Tours after nine volunteer guides completed nationally recognised training through the Institute of Tourist Guiding.
Since the first tours began in June 2025, the volunteer-led initiative has introduced residents and visitors alike to the town's rich history, architecture and hidden gems.
The idea was first proposed by former Mayor Councillor Margy Longhurst, who wanted to create a team of qualified local guides to enhance the visitor experience while boosting civic pride.
Volunteers completed a three-month training programme before graduating as ITG White Badge Town Guides and beginning regular weekly tours.
Helen Sanderson, one of the volunteer guides, said:
"Being a Town Guide has been a true privilege. Not only have I enjoyed introducing others to the history and character of the town, but the experience has also helped me meet incredible new people and has even opened new career opportunities.
The free tours now take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 11am, starting from the Market Cross.
Councillor Helen Westmancoat, Mayor of Knaresborough, praised the volunteers, saying:
"The guides are a great asset to the town. What they don't know about Knaresborough is not worth knowing!"
As well as giving visitors a deeper insight into the town, the tours are helping to support local businesses by encouraging people to spend longer in Knaresborough and explore more of what it has to offer.
Donations made by participants also contribute towards the Mayor's chosen charities.
Following the success of the first year, Knaresborough Town Council is now exploring themed walks, recruiting more volunteer guides and working with local businesses and coach operators as part of plans to further strengthen the town's visitor offering.
Anyone wishing to join a tour can simply turn up at the Market Cross before 11am on Wednesdays or Saturdays, with the walks free to attend.
