Harrogate MP challenges prosecution rates on violence against women in Parliament

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Local MP Tom Gordon has challenged prosecution rates for violence against women and girls (VAWG) during a session in Parliament.

The MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough put questions to the Solicitor General, who oversees the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), about efforts to increase prosecution rates in cases involving violence against women and girls.

In response, the Minister highlighted an increase in the number of barristers available to prosecute rape cases, alongside funding for independent legal advisers to support adult victims of rape.

Tom raised concerns about public confidence in the justice system and asked what further measures were being taken to ensure cases were “prosecuted and treated with the gravity they deserve, and that justice will be delivered for victims?”

The Solicitor General pointed to the enhanced support available through the CPS, including dedicated victim liaison officers and opportunities for victims to meet with prosecution teams ahead of trial.

Speaking afterwards, Tom said:

“Violence against women and girls remains unacceptably high. My inbox has been flooded with people concerned about cases like Fordingbridge.

“Cases like these have a terrible impact on the victims of these crimes and others as they lose yet more faith in the criminal justice system.

“We must fight for a system that victims can trust.”

The exchange comes amid ongoing national discussions around violence against women and girls, prosecution rates and support for victims within the criminal justice system.
