Harrogate cyclists conquer Pyrenees challenge in twin town

Ten Harrogate cyclists have conquered a gruelling challenge in the French Pyrenees while representing the town in Bagnères-de-Luchon.

Around 600 cyclists took part in the La Lapébie cyclosportive on Sunday 13th September, tackling some of the region’s famous roads and mountain climbs.

The Harrogate team was brought together by Dennis Richards of Harrogate International Partnerships, which also provided financial support towards the trip.

Its riders represented Harrogate Nova, Harrogate Tri Club, Prologue Junior Racing Team and The Contrarians of Wheel Easy.

Participants could choose between two timed routes. The 105km Eth Camino included 2,227 metres of climbing, while the 121km Eth Gran Camin featured 3,380 metres of ascent and a summit finish at Superbagnères.

Both routes took cyclists over the Col des Ares, Col de Menté and Col du Portillon, briefly crossing the border into Spain.

Temperatures of up to 36C added to the challenge, while competitors also had to meet strict cutoff times to remain in the event.

Harrogate rider Emma Dooley was one of only nine women to complete the full Eth Gran Camin route, finishing at the summit of Superbagnères.

The mountain has a rich cycling history and hosted the finish of Stage 14 of the Tour de France in 2025.

The event also offered the group an opportunity to celebrate Harrogate’s relationship with Luchon. The two spa towns have been twinned for 73 years and share links through sport, health and the outdoors.

Rob Beagley, who completed the challenge alongside his son James, said:

“It’s been a fantastic weekend. Luchon is a beautiful place, and it’s an honour to have flown the flag for our wonderful town of Harrogate.”

The trip was also supported by Harrogate businesses Verity Frearson, Hornbeam Park Developments and Endless.
