Harrogate buses join fight against town centre crime

The Harrogate Bus Company has joined a town centre network that allows businesses to share reports of crime and antisocial behaviour.

The operator has signed up to Harrogate BID’s ShopSafe Alert app, which connects more than 30 businesses and local partners.

Members can report incidents and share concerns to help identify problems across the town centre.

Harrogate BID Business Crime Officer Paul Evans said:

“Keeping Harrogate safe is a shared responsibility, and effective partnership working is an important part of that.

"The ShopSafe app gives businesses a straightforward way to share information about incidents and concerns, helping us better understand what is happening across the town.”

He said working with transport operators was valuable because of their role in helping people travel into, around and out of Harrogate.

Transdev Head of Operations Kel Pizzuti said:

“The safety and security of our customers and driver colleagues will always remain a top priority for us here at the Harrogate Bus Company – so the decision to join a network that drives down criminal and anti-social behaviour was an easy one.”

The bus company is already part of the Shop Watch and Pub Watch schemes and uses the council’s CCTV and radio system.

It has cameras at Harrogate bus station and on its buses, and plans to issue body cameras to Duty Managers.

The partnership also supports Harrogate BID’s longer-term ambition to gain Purple Flag accreditation, which recognises towns with safe and well-managed evening and night-time economies.
