Harrogate and Knaresborough see drop in unemployment claims The number of unemployment claimants in Harrogate and Knaresborough has dropped, according to the latest government figures. Figures show that there were 1,140 employment-related benefit claimants locally in September, which was 1.8 per cent of the working age population. This compares to a rate of 3.7 per cent nationally. There were 165 claimants aged 18-24, which was 3.3 per cent of the population aged 18-24. The equivalent UK claimant rate was 4.9 per cent. The change from last year was a decrease of 90 claimants. However, there has been a month-on-month increase of 10 claimants. Local MP Andrew Jones said:
"I am pleased that our area continues to see historically low unemployment figures and it is important that we continue our efforts to help people into work given the small month-on-month increase. "I know from my visit to the Harrogate Job Centre in August that our local JobCentre Plus team are working hard to help local people into work, in particular older people with the ‘50Plus Mid Life MOT’."Read more local stories from Your Harrogate here.
