Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody passed through Ripon yesterday (Sunday) as part of an epic charity cycling challenge from Newcastle to Twickenham.

The 47-year-old, who captained England and was part of the country's 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning squad, is cycling around 500 miles over seven days to raise money and awareness for motor neurone disease (MND).

Moody and his support team were spotted at Ripon Rugby Club as the ride made its way south from Newcastle, with the former flanker stopping to meet supporters along the route.

The challenge will finish at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday ahead of the Premiership Rugby Final, where Moody is due to deliver the match ball.

The ride is supporting the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, the charity established by former Scotland international Doddie Weir following his own MND diagnosis.

Lewis Moody MBE said:

“Since retiring from playing in 2012, I’ve taken on a fundraising challenge every year, and I’m determined to do the same in 2026, despite living with MND.

"I don’t know how many more opportunities I’ll have to push myself in this way, which is why taking on this 500-mile cycling challenge now feels so important as I look to support the fight against the disease.

“But this is about far more than the miles. Like so much of life, it’s about people - mates coming together, supporting each other, finding strength in camaraderie, and really hoping we can make a difference."

He added:

"Above all, it’s about using that energy, and the platform I’m fortunate to have, to make as big an impact as possible for everyone living with MND – raising vital funds for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, accelerating progress, and helping drive the change and outcomes this community so urgently needs.

"I want to do everything in my power to make a difference, building on the work of giants who have gone before me."

Several former teammates and fellow rugby legends are expected to join him for sections of the journey, including members of England's 2003 World Cup-winning squad.

Residents in Ripon turned out to cheer Moody on as he passed through the city.

Anyone wishing to support Lewis Moody's challenge can donate via the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.
