A family farm near Ripon has been named Regenerative Farmer of the Year at the British Farming Awards.

Mallard Grange Farm collected the award, sponsored by The Ethical Butcher, at a ceremony in Birmingham on Thursday (15th October).

James Johnson runs the farm alongside his father Charles, with the Johnson family having farmed the land three miles west of Ripon since 1933.

Sharing the news on social media, the Mallard Grange team said:

“We were humbled to be shortlisted, so to come away with the award was something we never expected.

“A huge thank you to Bishopton Farm Team for the kind nomination and to everyone who has supported us along the way.”

The award recognises the farm’s work to improve soil health, support wildlife and build a more resilient business.

Changes have included introducing grazing systems that allow grassland longer to recover, planting a wider variety of crops and reducing the use of artificial fertiliser.

The farm’s pasture-raised hens also follow grazing livestock, helping to control pests and naturally fertilise the land.

The team thanked the judges and sponsors, and congratulated fellow winners from across the farming industry.

They said:

“We don’t get out very often, so it was a real treat to get dressed up, enjoy wonderful food and drinks, and celebrate with our fellow farmers.”

The evening also featured a performance from the Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir, with Jeremy Clarkson and Kaleb Cooper joining them on stage to collect an award.

The Mallard Grange team added:

“Most importantly, thank you for all the kind messages, encouragement and support. We never underestimate the importance of our community and the people who follow what we stand for.

“Thank you for being part of our journey, we are proud to be farming for the future.”
