Knaresborough toilets upgraded after recent vandalism

Cllrs Matt Walker and Hannah Gostlow with North Yorkshire Council's Heads of Toilets Steve and Simon.

New doors have been installed at public toilets in Knaresborough following a recent spate of vandalism across the town.

The improvements at Conyngham Hall Car Park aim to address access issues and help deter further damage, with new ventilation panels also added.

Cllr Hannah Gostlow visited the facilities and met with two members of the team responsible for managing 93 public toilets across North Yorkshire.

The visit follows incidents at toilets in Castle Yard car park and on Fisher Street between 9th and 10th October, which caused around £1,000 worth of damage.

Water-based paint was thrown over internal walls, while a sink basin was forcibly removed from a wall and smashed.

Earlier this month, repeated vandalism also prompted the temporary closure of the town’s bus station toilets and the introduction of 6pm closing times for public conveniences across Knaresborough.

Maintenance staff reported near-nightly incidents, including soaked toilet paper being scattered around the facilities.

Cllr Hannah Gostlow said:

“We were grateful for the chance to discuss the vandalism at our facilities over recent weeks, and really pleased to see the new doors being installed at the Conyngham Hall Car Park toilets today.

“We hope the new doors will help address some of the access issues and deter further vandalism. The new ventilation panels should make a difference too.”

Anyone with information about the damage at Castle Yard and Fisher Street is asked to email Sylvia.Matla@northyorkshire.police.uk or call 101, quoting reference 12260200013.
