Ripon Grammar has been ranked among England's top 50 grammar schools in a new league table published by The Daily Telegraph.
The school placed 42nd out of 163 selective state schools, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points and receiving the newspaper’s highest overall rating of ‘very good’.
It was the only grammar school in the North of England and Yorkshire to feature in the top 50.
The ranking assesses schools against eight measures, including academic performance, university destinations, class sizes and attendance, using data from the 2024–25 academic year.
Headmaster Jonathan Webb said:
“This result reflects the hard work and ambition of our pupils, the dedication of our staff and the support of our families.
“It is particularly pleasing to see our academic performance recognised alongside the breadth of opportunities we offer as a co-educational state grammar school.
“While academic achievement is hugely important, we believe a great education is about much more than examination results. We want every pupil to discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities and leave RGS well equipped for the next stage of their lives.”
According to the league table, RGS recorded an average class size of 19.6 pupils, while 62 per cent of students progressed to leading universities.
Its A-level performance was also rated above both national and local averages.
The assessment considers GCSE and A-level results, the range of subjects available and the proportion of pupils progressing to Russell Group and other leading universities.
Telegraph data editor Ben Butcher said:
“Grammar schools represent the pinnacle of state education in England.
“With 163 of them scattered across the country, these schools are fiercely competitive, academically brilliant and so influential that they actively push up house prices as parents attempt to muscle into catchment areas.”
Other northern schools featured in the rankings included Lancaster Royal Grammar School in 68th, Heckmondwike Grammar School in 80th, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School in 93rd and Ermysted’s Grammar School in Skipton in 95th.
Ripon Grammar offers both day and boarding places, with boarders coming from across the UK and overseas.
As a state school, it does not charge tuition fees, although boarding fees apply.
The school says it also places importance on sport, music, drama and pastoral care, alongside academic achievement.
Its Sixth Form Open Evening will take place on Thursday 5th November, with further information available on the school’s website.
