A new Tesco superstore on Skipton Road will welcome its first customers today (Tuesday).
The new Harrogate supermarket has been in the works since early 2025, with construction activity and associated roadworks causing periods of disruption along Skipton Road.
Its opening at 8am today has created around 120 jobs and features a range of design elements aimed at reducing its environmental impact.
Tesco says the site is its low-carbon concept store, with updated heating and lighting systems designed to cut energy use.
Store Manager Annabelle Speed said:
“We are extremely excited to be opening our new store and helping to serve the local community. We want to offer great value to our customers and the benefits of Tesco Clubcard and Clubcard Prices.
“We are so pleased to have got to this point where we can finally open the doors and want to thank everyone for their patience. We look forward to having a positive impact in Harrogate and serving our customers.”
Alongside food, groceries and F&F clothing, the opening will see a £1,000 grant awarded to Resurrected Bites, a Harrogate-area food waste charity that runs community cafés.
Tesco says the store will continue to support local causes through its Stronger Starts programme, which provides quarterly grants of £1,500, £1,000 and £500 to charities and community groups. Customers can vote for projects in store using blue tokens, and nominations can be made online.
The supermarket will also operate a permanent donation point for long-life food items to support the Trussell network of food banks.
Through its Community Food Connection scheme, run with FareShare, Tesco says more than 300 million meals have been redistributed to charities across the UK since 2015.
The retailer says the new store will offer Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices.
