Paralympic football captain Roy Turnham paid a visit to a Knaresborough primary school, inspiring pupils with his journey to the top of international sport.
Aspin Park Academy welcomed the England Paralympic football captain on Friday 13th February as part of the Great Athletes programme.
Raised in Wavertree, Liverpool, Roy was always active as a child, taking part in a wide range of sports including football, cricket, judo and swimming.
His commitment to football has led to selection for England and Great Britain.
During his visit, Roy led each class in a short fitness circuit, encouraging pupils to challenge themselves and understand the value of effort and determination.
He also delivered a whole-school assembly, sharing his personal journey, the obstacles he has faced and how he progressed to the highest levels of his sport.
Lauren Pollard, Year 6 Teacher at Aspin, said:
“Pupils were fascinated to learn about the adaptations used in blind football.
“He spoke honestly about the challenges he faced at school when playing alongside sighted children, explaining how they could react more quickly when the ball left the floor, which made matches particularly difficult.
“His story highlighted the importance of resilience, self-belief and finding the right support to thrive.”
The school community raised more than £2,000 in sponsorship linked to the event. Part of the total will support Roy’s involvement, with the remainder set to be invested in new sports equipment for pupils, helping to promote active lifestyles and inclusive sport.
Staff said the visit made a strong impression on pupils, reinforcing messages about ambition, hard work and overcoming barriers.
