An animal charity that supports vulnerable pets from Harrogate has launched a major public appeal to help fund a £2 million redevelopment of its facilities.
RSPCA York Animal Home, which cares for animals from York, Harrogate and the surrounding area, is aiming to transform its site with new specialist accommodation for puppies, a purpose-built cattery and a community welfare hub.
The charity has already secured £1.2 million towards the first phase of the project, leaving £800,000 still to be raised to keep construction on track for completion by June 2027.
The redevelopment forms the first stage of a wider £5 million vision to modernise the site over the coming years.
For almost 50 years, York Animal Home has provided care and rehabilitation for animals that have been abandoned, neglected or mistreated before helping them find new homes.
However, the charity says its current facilities are no longer fit for modern animal welfare standards, with some accommodation already unusable and ageing buildings becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
Lucy Lowthian, Capital Campaign Lead for York Animal Home, said:
"Every animal that arrives at York Animal Home deserves a safe place to recover, heal and begin a new chapter. For almost fifty years we've been providing that second chance, but our facilities are no longer fit for the future.
"This redevelopment is about far more than buildings. It's about ensuring vulnerable animals across York, Harrogate and the surrounding region continue to receive the care they need for generations to come."
She added:
"Many people are surprised to learn that York Animal Home is an independently funded local charity. While we're proud to be part of the RSPCA family, the work we do here relies on the generosity of our community and supporters.
"We've made a fantastic start, with £1.2 million already secured, but the next few months are crucial. With construction underway and our sights set on completing Phase One by June 2027, every donation received now will help us maintain momentum and bring these much-needed facilities closer to reality."
Phase One of the redevelopment will include specialist accommodation for puppies and their mothers, a modern purpose-built cattery and a new community welfare hub supporting education, training, rehabilitation and community engagement.
Future phases will see the creation of new dog rehabilitation facilities, improved veterinary and adoption spaces, and more sustainable buildings designed to support the charity's long-term future.
