The Office for National Statistics has published the latest claimant count data for the Skipton and Ripon constituency.

In July 2025, 935 people in the Skipton and Ripon area were claiming unemployment-related benefits, representing 1.7% of the working-age population (aged 16 to 64).

This is below the UK average of 4%.

The figures show a monthly increase of 10 claimants, both overall and among those aged 18 to 24.

Compared to the same month last year, there has been a decrease of 185 claimants overall, including 30 fewer claimants aged 18 to 24.

In total, 140 people in this age group were claiming in July.

Local MP Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith commented on the results saying:

"These figures are encouraging and reflect the strength of our local economy.

"The year-on-year drop in the number of claimants - particularly among young people - is a positive sign.

"However, we have seen a small monthly rise and I will continue working with local employers, training providers, and support services to ensure that everyone in Skipton and Ripon has access to meaningful employment and the help they need.

"I will also continue to make the case to Government that lower taxes and regulation on small business are key to job creation."
