One of Harrogate's oldest family businesses is celebrating a major milestone this year.
Smiths of Harrogate, based at The Rink on Dragon Road, is marking 120 years since founder Frederick Smith opened a second-hand furniture shop in the town in 1906.
Now in its fifth generation, the independent retailer remains family-owned and employs a team serving customers across Yorkshire and beyond.
The business moved into the former roller-skating rink on Dragon Road in 1935 – a building that gave rise to its long-standing name, Smiths The Rink. The company rebranded as Smiths of Harrogate in 2023 while retaining its historic home.
Today, the store occupies 30,000 sq ft across two floors, selling furniture, beds and sofas.

Managing director Olly Smith, the fifth generation of the family to run the business, said the company continues to combine traditional customer service with a modern retail approach.
He told Your Harrogate:
“Reaching 120 years is something we’re incredibly proud of. Every generation of our family has brought something new to the business, while still keeping the values of service, trust and doing things properly that Smiths was founded on back in 1906.
"Over the years we’ve adapted to changing customer expectations, embraced new technology and continued to evolve, but the importance of looking after people has never changed.
"This anniversary is really an opportunity to thank the generations of customers, colleagues and local families who have supported us over the years."We’re proud to still be part of the Harrogate community and look forward to welcoming people to help us celebrate this special milestone.”

Smiths is marking its 120th anniversary with a celebration in-store from 3rd-6th July, including a competition and giveaways.
