Harrogate MP launches 'save our high streets' campaign

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has launched a plan aimed at supporting struggling high streets and local businesses.

The Liberal Democrat proposals include an emergency reduction in VAT to 5% for hospitality, accommodation and visitor attractions.

The party is also calling for business rates to be replaced with a Commercial Landowner Levy, the rise in employers’ National Insurance contributions to be reversed and councils to receive greater powers to tackle illicit vape shops.

According to figures highlighted by the Liberal Democrats, 1,400 businesses closed across North Yorkshire during the first half of 2026.

The number of businesses in the county fell by 85 as closures outnumbered new openings.

Mr Gordon also said 15 arts, entertainment and recreation venues were lost across North Yorkshire between 2019 and 2024.

He has launched a survey to better understand the challenges facing businesses in Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Mr Gordon said:

“Our high streets are dying but it’s not too late to save them.

“The Government must stop dragging its feet and implement the Liberal Democrats’ plan to bring the hustle and bustle back to our town centres, restore the high streets as the heart of our communities and make them a safe place for everyone to enjoy.

“We need North Yorkshire Council to step up their game too and do more to support local businesses.”
