Harrogate MP celebrates 250 spoken contributions in Parliament

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has made 250 spoken contributions in Parliament since being elected just over two years ago.

According to figures released by his office, the Liberal Democrat is in the top 5% of MPs for debate participation.

His contributions have covered issues including disabled bus passes, student finance repayments, the infected blood scandal and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision.

Mr Gordon has used parliamentary questions to seek the Prime Minister’s support for removing time restrictions on disabled bus passes.

He also recently introduced a Ten Minute Rule Bill aimed at addressing unfair student finance repayments.

His office said his total was more than 100 contributions higher than that of his Conservative predecessor, Andrew Jones, during his final two years in office.

Mr Gordon has also submitted 194 written questions to government departments.

Tom said:

“Spoken contributions are a fraction of the job. Between community events in North Yorkshire and meetings with charities or Ministers in London, and travel between the two, the time you spend speaking in the chamber can feel short – but it is crucial.

“The mum who emails me about North Yorkshire's school transport cuts has a vital experience that should be heard in the national debate. Being her voice is a pivotal part of the job.

“I'm proud to have hit the 250 milestone – about 20 of which were about disabled bus passes. It just goes to show how those words can become actions that improve people's lives.”
