What Have I Done To Deserve This

Harrogate boy to have beloved locks snipped in memory of favourite teacher

9-year-old Felix from Harrogate is having a sponsored haircut to fundraise in memory of former teacher Dave Keaton who passed away earlier this year.

Harrogate boy to have beloved locks snipped in memory of favourite teacher A "surfer dude" youngster from Harrogate is taking part in a sponsored haircut to fundraise in memory of his favourite teacher. 9-year-old Felix Hepworth will have his hair cut tomorrow (Tuesday) to fundraise for Mind in Harrogate after former educator Dave Keeton passed away earlier this year. Educational Psychologist Dave Keeton took his own life in April following a long battle with his mental health that stemmed from childhood. Keen to do something to support his great uncle, Felix has agreed to shed his long "surfer dude" hair, something he is said to be very attached to. Felix's Mum Suzannah said:

"My wonderful Felix was desperate to do something to help raise some funds so, inspired by one of his favourite teachers, he is making a big sacrifice. "As many of you know Felix has always had long biker/skater/surfer dude hair. He volunteered to have this cut off in the hope that he will raise a bit of cash for this great cause."
Following Dave's death in April, his family have been committed to raising money for Mind in Harrogate. Dave had suffered with his mental health since childhood and his family are hoping to raise £10,000 to help set up a new child and parent support service within the charity. Family member John Barnes, who created the JustGiving page, wrote:
"There is an urgent need now for more support for young people and their families and carers faced by a cost-of-living crisis, the negative after-shocks of the pandemic and a severe lack of resources in Government-funded services."
The fundraising campaign has raised £7,600 towards its goal and can be found here. Fundraising for Mind In the past three years, Dave's family have run two fundraising activities for Mind in Harrogate. The first was 'Masks4Mind' where they partnered with the long established British manufacturer Sunspel to make masks for frontline retail and hospitality workers and offer them for sale to customers of businesses the family are involved in. All proceeds were donated to Mind. John Barnes then co-wrote, along with colleague Laura Cowan, a book about companies and individuals they knew about their experiences during the pandemic. The book, "Altering Course, the Covid Chronicles," was published in 2022. All proceeds again went to Mind in Harrogate. Dave Keeton was an active supporter and fundraiser for the last two campaigns prior to his death. Read more local stories from Your Harrogate here.
