Ground investigations are set to begin on The Stray as part of plans to reduce storm overflow discharges into Oak Beck.
Yorkshire Water will begin the work on Thursday 17th September as part of its £1.5billion programme to reduce discharges into watercourses across Yorkshire.
Contractors Ward and Burke will drill three boreholes on the grass between Montpellier Hill and the Esplanade over six weeks.
Each borehole will be around 20cm wide and 30 metres deep, allowing engineers to study ground conditions and monitor groundwater levels.
The findings will help Yorkshire Water determine the safest and most effective way to reduce discharges into Oak Beck from the sewer network.
Combined storm overflows act as relief valves when sewers carrying wastewater and rainwater become overloaded.
During periods of heavy rainfall, they release diluted wastewater into watercourses to prevent it backing up into homes, gardens, businesses and streets.
Athif Khan, Project Manager at Yorkshire Water, said:
“Our storm overflows are discharging more than we, and our customers, would like, and we're making good progress in bringing the frequency and duration of those discharges down. Last year, we saw a 24.5% reduction in discharges following the investments we've been making.
“These boreholes are the next step in our plans to reduce discharges into Oak Beck and improve our impact on the environment.
“We understand how important The Stray is for our customers in Harrogate, and we'll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum.
“Once completed, we will return The Stray to its current condition. We thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding.”
Ecology and tree surveys have already been carried out ahead of the investigation.
Once the work is complete, the boreholes will be filled in and the affected area of The Stray fully reinstated.
Yorkshire Water’s £1.5billion storm overflow programme will run from 2025 until 2030 and forms part of a wider £8.3billion investment in its services and environmental impact.
