Harrogate karate stars win 37 medals at World Championships

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club at the 2026 JKS World Championships.

Karate competitors from Harrogate have returned from Brazil with an impressive haul of 37 medals.

A squad of 21 athletes from Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club travelled to Vitória for the 2026 JKS World Championships.

The international event attracted more than 700 competitors, with 30 teams travelling from across the world.

Harrogate’s squad secured 12 gold, ten silver and 15 bronze medals while representing JKS England.

Their results helped England top the overall medal table for the first time.

A spokesperson for Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club said:

"If Harrogate alone was a nation they would have taken an incredible 5th place on the medals table just behind Japan!"

One of the standout performers was Jonty Price, who won gold medals in team kata and team kumite before being ranked the fourth-best athlete of the tournament.

The squad was led by Harrogate club instructor and former world karate champion Matt Price.

He was supported by assistant coaches Tom Little and Zoe Price, who are both fourth Dan black belts.
