Free bus travel scheme launched for Harrogate children

The DalesBus 74 links Harrogate with Ilkley, Bolton Abbey and Grassington.

Children in Harrogate will be able to travel for free on most local bus services throughout August as part of a new Government-backed summer travel scheme.

The Great British Summer Savings initiative allows children under the age of 16 to travel free on most local buses in England during the school holidays, helping families enjoy more affordable days out.

The offer includes DalesBus services from Harrogate, giving families the chance to visit destinations including the Yorkshire Dales and Fountains Abbey without paying for children's bus fares.

The Saturday DalesBus 74 links Harrogate with Ilkley, Bolton Abbey and Grassington, while the Sunday DalesBus 825 runs from Harrogate Bus Station at 10.15am to Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey, Masham, Leyburn and Richmond.

Young people aged under 19 can also continue to benefit from £1 single bus fares across York and North Yorkshire as part of an ongoing initiative from the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith.

Mr Skaith said:

"There is no better place for a Great British Summer of Savings than York and North Yorkshire. There's something for the whole family, from our historic cities to our beautiful beaches, the summer holidays are when families and friends can come together and create lasting memories.

"It's brilliant that this Yorkshire Day and every day over the Summer, families can enjoy free bus travel for children, and for teens our £1 under-19s bus fare means they can travel for less too."

The travel offers coincide with a special National Trust promotion at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, where under-18s travelling by bus can visit for £1 throughout August.

Bus services between Ripon and Fountains Abbey have also been increased for the school holidays, with additional Monday to Saturday services running until 5 September, alongside existing Sunday and Bank Holiday DalesBus services.
