A much-loved community initiative in North Yorkshire is calling for more volunteer drivers to keep its vital service on the road and help tackle the growing issue of rural loneliness.
The 'Heck!' Community Pink Bus, based near Kirklington and Bedale, has become a lifeline for over 200 local residents since its launch.
Providing transport to markets, social events, school trips and scenic outings, the brightly coloured bus supports communities where public transport is limited or non-existent.
And Peter Wright, TV’s The Yorkshire Vet and an ambassador for the bus, says the service is "transforming lives."
He said:
“Rural loneliness isn’t just about being alone. It’s about being cut off, physically, emotionally and socially.
"I’ve seen elderly people who’ve gone days without speaking to another soul.
"This bus helps people reconnect. It brings back dignity and joy.”
According to the North Yorkshire Rural Health and Care Summit, more than one in five rural residents report frequent loneliness, with lack of transport cited as a major barrier to social connection and healthcare access.
The bus is supported by volunteer drivers, who are key to its continued success.
Colin Blanchard, a Trustee of local charity The Dales Centre, recently took passengers on scenic tours of the Dales, including visits to Richmond and Fountains Abbey.
He said:
“The bus not only provides transport, but a real sense of connection.
“Some people have lived in Masham all their life, never visiting beauty spots within a few miles.
"On these trips, people open up and share their stories—it’s something special.”
Becky Keeble, Heck!’s Community Ambassador, echoed the call for more help.
She said:
“We’re really proud of what the pink bus has achieved.
“But we need more volunteer drivers to reach more people. Even a couple of hours a month could make a big difference.”
“It’s more than a lift. It gives people a sense of belonging.
"We’re all about bringing people together through food, and we’re so pleased the bus is helping to connect our community.”
The HECK! Community Pink Bus embodies the company’s motto to "Live Food to the Full", showing that great food and great company can nourish both body and soul.
