Work is set to begin on a major redevelopment of the main entrance at Harrogate District Hospital.
The project has been approved by the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust Board and will create a more modern, welcoming and accessible entrance for patients, visitors and staff.
Work is due to begin in early September 2026, with the new entrance expected to be completed in spring 2027.
The redevelopment will include a range of new retail and refreshment facilities, including a Costa Coffee store and M&S Food.
The entrance will also feature improved self-check-in and reception facilities, new informal seating areas and additional toilet facilities, including a Changing Places toilet.
The Trust says the redesigned space will provide a more open and accessible arrival point while reflecting the standard of care delivered across the hospital.
Sustainability will also be a key part of the project, with design features intended to reduce the environmental impact of the development and support the Trust's longer-term commitment to greener healthcare.
The project is being delivered by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with property development and investment company noviniti and One Retail, the retail division of Compass Group UK & Ireland.
Planning approval for the redevelopment was secured in February 2026.
The hospital will remain accessible throughout the construction work, with the current front entrance continuing to be used.
The Trust says any changes to access will be clearly signposted and disruption will be kept to a minimum.
The project is primarily commercially funded, with the Trust confirming that no funding will be taken away from frontline care, patient services or staff budgets.
As preparations continue, WHSmiths in the hospital entrance closed in July.
The hospital's Café Bistro is also due to close at the end of September.
Food and drinks will continue to be available from Herriots restaurant on the first floor of the hospital.
Jonathan Coulter, Chief Executive at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, said the aim was to ensure patients, visitors and carers feel supported from the moment they arrive.

“We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel supported and reassured from the moment they arrive.
“This project has been designed to create a space that meets the needs of a modern healthcare setting while improving the experience for everyone who uses it.”
The new entrance is expected to open to the public in spring 2027.
