Volunteers invited to help spruce up Harrogate town centre

Harrogate BID is inviting people to help improve the town centre.

Volunteers are being invited to help spruce up Harrogate town centre as part of a new four-day initiative.

Harrogate BID will hold its first Harrogate Action Days from Wednesday 16th until Saturday 19th September.

Businesses, community groups, local organisations and residents will work together on practical projects designed to make a visible difference to the town.

Activities could include litter picking, street sweeping, weeding, planting, cleaning street furniture and refreshing planters.

Volunteers may also help remove graffiti, report maintenance issues and paint utility boxes where permission has been granted.

Harrogate BID has set an initial target of 80 volunteering hours, which could be achieved by 20 people each contributing four hours.

Jason Maxwell, CEO of Harrogate BID, said:

“Harrogate Action Days are about bringing people together to take practical action and take pride in the town we all share.

“There are lots of ways to get involved, whether you can spare an hour or a full day, and we hope businesses, community groups and individuals will get behind the initiative.

“There’s a real opportunity here to bring back a sense of civic pride and encourage people to take an active role in looking after the town they live and work in.”

Mr Maxwell said the initiative was not intended to replace work carried out by the council, which is facing financial pressures.

He added:

“They’re about asking what we can do together, as businesses and as a community, to make a positive difference to the place we all share.”

Businesses are being encouraged to use the Action Days as a corporate volunteering opportunity for their teams.

No specialist DIY skills are required, with training, tools and protective equipment provided where necessary.

Volunteering sessions will range from one hour to a full day, with activities available for different ages and abilities.

Anyone wishing to take part should email info@harrogatebid.co.uk by Friday 11th September. Places are limited.
