Police are appealing for information after vandals caused around £1,000 worth of damage to public toilets in Knaresborough.

Two facilities, in Castle Yard car park and on Fisher Street, were targeted between 9th and 10th October.

The damage included water-based paint being thrown over internal walls and a sink basin being forcibly removed from a wall and smashed.

Knaresborough Town Councillor Matt Walker, who reported the incident to police, said:

“This is hugely disappointing. These facilities are there for everyone, and a small minority are putting their future at risk through this unacceptable behaviour.”

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during this period or who may have information that could assist our enquiries.

“Incidents such as these have a direct impact on the local community and result in unnecessary repair costs to public facilities.”

Anyone with information is asked to email Sylvia.Matla@northyorkshire.police.uk or visit the North Yorkshire Police website, select ‘Tell us about’ and then ‘An existing case or report’.

The force’s online live chat is also available Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm. Anyone unable to use these options can call 101.

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through its website.
