Tributes paid to Harrogate teacher following death at just 46

46-year-old Tim Connors passed away from skin cancer last month.

Tributes have been paid to much-loved Harrogate teacher who has died from skin cancer at the age of 46.

Tim Connors, who was from Harrogate taught at Nidderdale High School in Pateley Bridge for more than two decades, passed away on 15th September following a long battle with malignant melanoma.

His funeral took place on Friday (10th October), with the school closing for the day to allow staff and pupils to attend.

Head teacher Kath Jordan said it was a fitting tribute to someone who had devoted “half his life” to the school.

She described Mr Connors as a dedicated and loyal colleague who was deeply proud of the school community.

She said:

“He gave so much of himself to Nidderdale. He was fiercely loyal, caring and proud of the work he did here.

“His passing has been a huge shock to staff and students alike.”

Mr Connors began teaching at Nidderdale High School in 2003, initially as a PE teacher before moving into the humanities department.

He was also part of the school’s pastoral support team and was known for his warmth, humour and commitment to his students.

According to Ms Jordan, pupils remembered him as “strict, caring and funny”, with many describing him as their favourite teacher.

Mr Connors was first diagnosed with melanoma in 2017.

He underwent several treatments, including immunotherapy, clinical trials and chemotherapy, but continued to work for as long as possible.

Outside of school, he was an active member of the local community and enjoyed football, cricket, camping and canoeing with his two daughters.

He was also involved in Scouting for many years.

His family described him as “a wonderful father, son, brother, uncle and friend”, saying they had been deeply touched by the outpouring of messages celebrating his kindness and influence.

Friend and former pupil Ryan Lockie, who played cricket with Mr Connors at Markington Cricket Club, remembered him as “a team player” and “a fun character” who remained positive despite his illness.

Mr Lockie said:

“He was such a nice guy, easy to get along with and always up for a laugh.

“He was a brilliant fielder too. We’re going to put a bench in his favourite spot at the ground where he used to watch matches with his girls.”

Nidderdale High School will hold a memorial service in Mr Connors’ honour on 17th October at St Cuthbert’s Church.
