A group of apprentices in Ripon are highlighting the opportunities available through local apprenticeship schemes as part of National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from the 9th to the 15th of February.
Leah Davies, Charlotte Ross, Georgie Ross and Brendan Nelson are currently taking part in an apprenticeship programme at Specsavers Ripon, working across roles including optical assistance, customer service, dispensing and spectacle making.
The programme combines paid employment with structured training and qualifications.
Charlotte Ross, who began her apprenticeship in 2023, said the experience has helped build her confidence and communication skills.
She said learning in a working environment, with support from colleagues, had made the training more accessible and allowed her to develop new skills on a daily basis.
She added that the experience has helped her progress towards further professional qualifications.
Georgie Ross said:
“I would highly recommend an apprenticeship role for the dedication and support, not only from the apprenticeship team but also from my colleagues.
"The apprenticeship materials also greatly supported me throughout my experience, helping me gain a deeper understanding of my role.
"Having dedicated learning time that allowed me to build confidence and knowledge in my role was a great privilege.
"I couldn’t recommend it enough!”
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, organisations across Ripon are promoting apprenticeship opportunities for young people.
Specsavers Ripon currently has apprenticeship vacancies available.
Katherine Friis, Director at Specsavers Ripon, said:
“On behalf of the team, it’s been wonderful watching our apprentices excel and grow in their roles.
"Apprentices play a vital part in our practice and offer fantastic opportunities to gain skills and qualifications whilst earning."
“The structured learning pathway ensures steady, consistent progress towards a clear goal, all whilst being part of a supportive and rewarding team.
"We are proud to have supported 7 apprentices in Ripon over the years and to have invested in local people who have gone on to be excellent dispensers, technicians and customer advisors.”
