Yesterday students across the country received their A-level results and Ripon Grammar School resulted with high outstanding grades, with a few incredible students to mention.
Albert Saggers
18-year-old Albert Saggers defied all odds after he achieved 2 A* and an A in his results after receiving an ungradable in his mock physics exam.
He received an A in maths, A* in economics, and an A* in physics.
His last-minute ADHD diagnosis in January changed his life.
Before he was diagnosed, Albert found it hard to concentrate and he never managed to do any academic work outside school hours.
Sixth-form staff at RGS noticed that he found it difficult to focus and encouraged him to be assessed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
“It allowed me to focus and work for eight hours a day.
I went from being able to do nothing to doing as much as I wanted.
It gave me so much more energy. I’m very grateful it was spotted and it has made all the difference,"
he said.
Albert, who joined RGS in sixth form from Ryedale School and has been working in a bar in Cornwall over the summer, plans to travel in Central and South America during his gap year before taking up his place at the University of Exeter to study economics.
Sufwana Sayed
Yesterday's birthday girl, Sufwana Sayed had cause for two celebrations as she received her results on her 18th birthday.
Sufwana gained two A*s and an A in psychology, English literature, and maths.
She will now go to Cambridge to study law.
She is now looking forward to developing a career in law, after watching true crime documentaries sparked her interest in both working within the justice system and helping to reform it.
“I can help people in more ways than advocating for them in court.
I can also be a part of shifting the justice system, which is one which has many flaws.”
A keen pianist, Sufwana juggled her studies with her role as a junior ambassador with Green Shelter Charity, which fosters a harmonious relationship between people and nature.
Sufwana, whose volunteering work includes helping teach children about the environment in an interactive and engaging way, added:
The boarding student, from Stevenage in Hertfordshire, told how moving to boarding for sixth form was a challenge.
“I had never boarded before so having to adapt to the new environment, as well as adapting to the jump from GCSE to A-level was quite stressful.
But I had strong ambitions to achieve top grades and to apply to a top competitive university which came with its own pressures and struggles.”
Coral Watt
Coral Watt who is a talented young yachtswoman is setting sail for her dream career after picking up her A-level grades.
Coral has won a scholarship to the top nautical college in the country after gaining A, B and C in geography, maths and physics, alongside her AS level in further maths.
She dreams of qualifying as a master mariner and a captain of a cruise ship.
“I will be training on a variety of ships from icebreakers and cargo ships to cruise liners and, once qualified, will be able to work anywhere in the world on any vessel,”
she said.
Her place on the Merchant Navy degree scheme at Fleetwood Nautical Campus is being sponsored by Trinity House London.
The three-year BSc (Hons) course in nautical science and marine operations management, in addition to an officer of the watch certificate of competency, involves at least 12 months at sea.
Coral juggled her A-level studies with part-time work at Grantley Hall Hotel as well as being a Royal Yachting Association dinghy sailing instructor.
Coral, who has been on boats with her parents since she was six months old and started sailing herself when she was seven years old, has helped run races at Ripon Sailing Club.
She also took part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award scheme last summer, which involved a week with no internet and a variety of outdoor activities to learn about successful leadership and teamwork.
