Police operation to disrupt criminal activity in Harrogate

North Yorkshire Police has reassured the public following an increased officer presence in Harrogate town centre last week.

Uniformed and plain-clothed officers have been deployed as part of Project Servator, a national policing tactic designed to disrupt criminal activity, including terrorism.

North Yorkshire Police has used the approach across the county for almost ten years.

The deployments are deliberately unpredictable, making it more difficult for people planning criminal activity to avoid officers.

Police said members of the public should not be alarmed by the operation.

Officers will speak to shoppers, visitors and local businesses while carrying out patrols around the town centre.

Residents, shoppers and business owners are also being encouraged to report anything which appears suspicious, including unattended bags or unusual behaviour.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:

“Residents, shoppers and business owners are our extra eyes and ears.

“If something feels off, a bag left unattended, someone acting strangely, anything that doesn’t sit right, trust your instinct and tell us.”

Suspicious activity can be reported to a nearby officer or by calling 101. People should call 999 in an emergency or if a crime is taking place.
