Parking at Conyngham Hall and other key areas are set to be scrapped for next year's Great Knaresborough Bed Race.
North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that that fees for the use of car parks will be waived on the event’s 60th anniversary.
It’s set to return on Saturday 13th June 2026.
The decision follows local MP Tom Gordon’s negotiations with North Yorkshire Council Chief Executive Richard Flinton and offers vital support to the Knaresborough Lions, organisers of the annual event.

The waiver applies exclusively to the 2026 event, with future arrangements subject to the outcome of the Council’s upcoming parking review.
Tom Gordon MP said:
“I’m grateful to North Yorkshire Council for supporting the Great Knaresborough Bed Race by waiving car park charges for next year’s event.
“I look forward to the outcome of the Council’s parking review and hope it reflects the long-term value the Bed Race brings to Knaresborough not only through tourism, but also by encouraging local pride and community spirit.”
He added:
“I want to thank the Knaresborough Lions, whose tireless dedication makes this iconic event possible year after year.
“Their commitment to our town is inspirational. As we approach the 60th anniversary in 2026, I’ll continue doing all I can to support them in delivering a truly memorable celebration for our community.”
Knaresborough Lions' Bed Race Chairman Jatinder Kalsi said:
“Bed Race 2025 was a great success with the whole town coming together to celebrate.
“We are extremely grateful for local MP and Bed Race runner Tom Gordon for negotiated waiving of North Yorkshire Council's parking charges at Conyngham Hall, and other car parks throughout Knaresborough.
“We rely on donations from the public and sponsorship from local businesses to pay for the cost of holding the event.
“The costs have risen significantly so we have very little surplus revenue to allow for investment in next year's event and to support our charitable giving.
“We encourage the public and local businesses to support the event and make donations through our website.”
Local councillors have also welcomed the news.
Councillor Hannah Gostlow said:
“This support is much needed, appreciated, and deserved. The Knaresborough Lions not only provide our community with one of the most fun days in our events calendar, but the Bed Race promotes our town nationally and internationally, boosts our local economy, and raises thousands of pounds for charity.”
Preparation is already underway for next year’s event, which involves significant planning and financial challenges.
To ensure the Bed Race continues to thrive in its 60th year and beyond, public donations and sponsorships are more important than ever.
