The Your Harrogate Local Hero Awards return this week to shine a light on the selfless, dedicated and inspirational people across the Harrogate district.
The glitzy awards ceremony will take place at Rudding Park on Friday thanks to Harrogate Town and to our headline sponsors, O’Connor Chiropractic.
After a difficult judging process, we've whittled down the nominations to a shortlist of people, groups and workplaces across various categories, all equally deserving of recognition for the role they play in local life.
And ahead of the event, we're taking a closer look at some of our amazing local hero finalists who will be joining us for what promises to be an emotional and inspirational evening...

Sara and Kelly Hirst, owners of the Black Swan in Ripon, have created a welcoming community hub focused on inclusion and wellbeing. Harrogate Hockey Club Men’s 2nd Team
Harrogate Hockey Club Men’s 2nd Team secured the Yorkshire Division 2 League Title and promotion through resilience, teamwork and consistency. Despite changing player availability, the squad remained focused and adaptable throughout the season. Led by captain Josh Lyon, they built a positive culture on and off the pitch, achieving deserved league success.
Craven Community Boxing Club
Craven Community Boxing Club has transformed lives by providing an inclusive, supportive environment promoting confidence, discipline and resilience. Founded by Mark, the club welcomes all ages and abilities while supporting health, wellbeing and competitive success. Its strong community spirit and inspiring leadership continue creating positive opportunities and meaningful change through sport.
Nidderdale District Under-11s Cricket Team
Nidderdale District Under-11s Cricket Team enjoyed a historic season, becoming Yorkshire champions against top junior opposition. Guided by coach Ben Quick, the squad developed into a supportive, united team demonstrating skill, composure and resilience beyond their years. Their achievements reflect the values of grassroots sport, including teamwork, pride and dedication.
Knaresborough Town Women
Knaresborough Town Women FC have achieved remarkable success since forming in 2022, earning four consecutive promotions and impressive cup runs. Managed by Mike Bligh, the determined squad has developed into a cohesive, ambitious team. Their rapid rise highlights exceptional teamwork, commitment and belief, establishing them among the region’s fastest-growing women’s football clubs.

Michelle Hayes – Resurrected Bites
Michelle Hayes, CEO of Resurrected Bites, combines sustainability with social impact through “pay as you can” cafés across the Harrogate district. By transforming surplus food into affordable meals, the organisation reduces food waste while supporting vulnerable communities. Welcoming spaces, community connection and environmental action make Michelle a deserving Sustainability Award finalist.
Open Country – Conservation Work Parties
Open Country’s Conservation Work Parties combine sustainability with inclusion, enabling individuals with disabilities to carry out vital environmental work across the Harrogate district. Working alongside major organisations, teams restore habitats, maintain access and support biodiversity. Beyond environmental benefits, the project builds confidence, reduces isolation and ensures countryside spaces remain accessible for everyone.
Little Explorers Day Nursery
Little Explorers Day Nursery has embedded sustainability into everyday learning through practical, eco-friendly initiatives. Children learn environmental responsibility through growing food, using natural materials and reducing single-use plastics. By encouraging sustainable habits from an early age and continually developing new initiatives, the nursery is inspiring future generations to care for the planet.

Mark Bryant
Harrogate Harriers coach Mark Bryant has shown exceptional dedication to developing young athletes across multiple disciplines. Volunteering several evenings weekly and sacrificing personal time, he supports athletes from beginner to elite level. Tony Page has dedicated years to supporting young players at Beckwithshaw Saints Juniors FC, helping them develop confidence, teamwork and resilience. David Wells has devoted more than 14 years to supporting Dementia Forward and those living with dementia. Charlotte Smith’s dedication keeps Hi-Lites Netball Club thriving. Joanna Currie has transformed outdoor learning at Henshaws Specialist College through an inclusive Forest School environment supporting students with complex needs. Jamie Wilson – St Aidan’s CE High School
St Aidan’s teacher Jamie Wilson inspires students both inside and outside the classroom. In memory of a colleague, he completed a 100km ultramarathon raising funds for Neuroendocrine Cancer UK. Demonstrating resilience, compassion and determination, Jamie has become a powerful role model, showing young people the importance of kindness, perseverance and community spirit.

Caiden Brown
Fifteen-year-old Caiden Brown has shown exceptional bravery while battling a rare form of oral cancer. Undergoing intensive treatment, he remains positive, determined and resilient despite immense challenges. Known for his passion for football and cricket, Caiden continues inspiring family, friends and the wider community through his strength, courage and refusal to give up.
Sarah Robson
Sarah Robson displayed outstanding bravery when she saved the life of a young child who choked at nursery. Acting calmly under immense pressure, she used her training to clear the child’s airway and provide reassurance afterwards. Her courage, quick thinking and professionalism make her a highly deserving recipient of the Bravery Award.
Imogen Molloy
Imogen Molloy has shown remarkable courage and determination following a devastating skiing accident that left her with multiple spinal fractures. Through months of rehabilitation and missed milestones, she remained resilient and focused. Returning to her studies with university offers secured, Imogen’s perseverance and positive outlook make her a truly inspiring nominee.

Amhra Dyer-Stott
Amhra Dyer-Stott has rapidly risen from local sprinting success to competing internationally for Great Britain in bobsleigh. Within months of taking up the sport, he achieved elite-level results including a fourth-place Europa Cup finish. Balancing university studies alongside competition, Amhra’s determination, resilience and talent continue inspiring young athletes across the region.
Andrew Simister
After losing his right leg above the knee, Andrew Simister discovered a new sporting path through padel. He has since achieved international success in inclusive competitions while championing accessibility in sport. Andrew’s resilience, determination and advocacy continue inspiring others, proving adversity can create new opportunities and extraordinary personal achievement.
Lottie McGuinness
Lottie McGuinness has established herself among Britain’s leading para powerlifters, achieving fourth place at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and winning European Championship bronze. Since beginning powerlifting in 2019, she has broken British records and inspired others through her resilience, openness and determination, encouraging confidence and self-belief beyond sport.

Amanda Shepherd
Amanda Shepherd has shown extraordinary resilience and unconditional love while caring for her daughter Karina, who lives with Rett syndrome. Despite years of challenges, she continues supporting others through volunteering and fundraising with warmth and positivity. Amanda’s strength, compassion and dedication to both family and community make her an exceptional nominee.
Victoria Robayna
Victoria Robayna showed extraordinary strength and love following her daughter Liz’s terminal diagnosis. She filled Liz’s life with memorable opportunities while celebrating her talents and passions. After Liz’s passing, Victoria continued supporting research, fundraising and her son Mateo. Her courage, compassion and dedication have created a powerful and lasting legacy.
Grace and Marshall Sibanda
Grace and Marshall Sibanda support children and families navigating disability through The Sibling Group Charity and Oscar’s Pathway. Inspired by personal experience, they have created safe, supportive spaces for siblings and carers. Despite the devastating loss of their baby son Noah, they continue uplifting others with compassion, resilience and unwavering dedication.

Richard Larking
Richard Larking completed the World’s Toughest Row, crossing the Atlantic over 3,000 miles in 46 days alongside friend David Knaggs. Training extensively and funding the challenge themselves, they raised more than £200,000 for Maggie’s Yorkshire and Friends of Alfie Martin, demonstrating extraordinary resilience, determination and commitment to charitable causes.
John Shackleton
John Shackleton has dedicated decades to fundraising and humanitarian support, organising aid deliveries across Europe since 1990. Even approaching 90, he continues supporting charities through recycling bikes, fundraising initiatives and community projects. Despite health challenges, John’s generosity, dedication and lifetime of service continue inspiring those around him.
Zoe & Simon Parkes
Zoe and Simon Parkes created The Declan John Foundation in memory of their son, supporting families experiencing baby loss.
