Saint Michael's Hospice in Harrogate has shared the story of how its team helped one local family create a final festive celebration together, as part of a national campaign highlighting the lasting impact of hospice care.
The hospice is taking part in phase two of the UK-wide This is Hospice Care campaign, led by Hospice UK, which aims to show that hospice care is about far more than end-of-life support.
It’s about creating memories, fostering connection, and celebrating life, even in its final stages.
For Saint Michael’s, this message is illustrated by the story of Mandy, who was cared for at the hospice’s Inpatient Unit before she died on 12th December 2024.
Christmas had always been Mandy’s favourite time of year, and with the help of the hospice team, she and her family were able to celebrate early — complete with decorations, lights, music and a full festive dinner prepared by the hospice chef.

Her husband Roy said:
“The entire team went above and beyond to make our Christmas Day as special as it could possibly be.
“We opened presents, pulled crackers, laughed, and cried. Most importantly, we created cherished Christmas memories in a way only Saint Michael’s could make possible and for that we will be forever grateful.”
According to Saint Michael’s, one in three of its patients are cared for thanks to gifts left in Wills.
These legacy donations help fund the hospice’s services and allow more families to share meaningful moments together at difficult times.
Tony Collins, Chief Executive of Saint Michael’s Hospice, said:
“Hospice care is about more than managing symptoms, it’s about making space for love, laughter, and togetherness.
“With one in three of our patients cared for thanks to gifts in Wills, this support is vital to ensuring we can continue to provide not just expert care, but also the chance to create memories that last a lifetime.
“A gift in your Will is the most meaningful legacy you can leave.”
The This is Hospice Care campaign, which launched earlier this year with a national TV advert inspired by real stories, carries a clear message:
“It’s finality and uncertainty… but it’s also love and life and celebration.
“It’s easing pain and bringing comfort, cherishing memories and creating new ones.
“This is the legacy of hospice care. But we need it to be your legacy too.”
Saint Michael’s says the continued generosity of supporters is essential to maintaining the care it provides across the Harrogate district and beyond.
