Harrogate swimmer awarded prestigious scholarship

A young Harrogate swimmer has been awarded a prestigious regional scholarship recognising some of the most promising talent in British swimming.

Amelia Wright, of Harrogate and District Swimming Club, has been awarded the 2025 Adrian Moorhouse Scholarship by the Yorkshire Swimming Association.

The award was presented at the recently completed Yorkshire Championships.

The scholarship is named after Adrian Moorhouse MBE, who set the 100m breaststroke world record in 1989 and equalled it twice in 1990.

It aims to support promising speed swimmers aged 14 to 16 as they continue to develop their careers.

Amelia has been part of the National Performance Squad from a young age and has been recognised for her ability, high performance rankings and strong work ethic.

Brian Charlton from Harrogate & District Swimming Club said:

“We are so pleased for Amelia who has been with the club since she was 8 years old alongside the likes of Lois [Child] who won the award last year.

“The rest of the squad and coaching team are really putting Harrogate District Swimming club front and centre on the swimming map in not just the county, but the country.”

Amelia is coached by Julian Harforth at Harrogate.

She has attended several national training camps and has represented Yorkshire every year since becoming eligible.

Her achievements include numerous podium finishes at national championships, and in 2025 she won gold in the 100m freestyle at the British Next Gen Championships.
