Harrogate MP calls for VAT cut to support hospitality businesses

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has called for a cut in VAT to support local hospitality businesses.

The Liberal Democrat raised the issue in Parliament following a roundtable with representatives from cafés, bars, hotels and pubs across the Harrogate district.

The meeting, held at North Bar last month, heard concerns about the pressures facing the hospitality sector, including the current rate of VAT.

Mr Gordon questioned First Secretary of State Lou Haigh about the government’s plans to remove barriers for businesses and promote a “pro-business culture”.

He asked whether ministers would consider reducing VAT for hospitality businesses.

Ms Haigh said reducing burdens and taxes for the sector was a priority, but did not directly address the request for a VAT cut.

Mr Gordon has pledged to continue campaigning on the issue.

He said:

“We need a VAT cut. An emergency 5% VAT cut on hospitality, accommodation and attractions is a key part of the Lib Dem plan to Save our Highstreets.

“It would boost local pubs, restaurants and entertainment venues while saving people money on the occasional extra.”
