Local MP Tom Gordon is calling on the government for improved local support for young carers.
It comes after the Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough met with young carers supported by Family Action during their respite visit to Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm.
According to the Tom, the visit gave him the opportunity to see the activities organised by Family Action’s Leeds Young Carers Support Service and to hear directly from the young carers about their experiences.
The day out gave young carers from Leeds the chance to step back from their responsibilities and enjoy new experiences.
From animal care to outdoor adventures, Lineham Farm – home to Leeds Children’s Charity, provided a safe space for the day for young carers to build confidence, make friends, and enjoy a rare break from their daily responsibilities.
During his visit, Tom met with young carers, Family Action staff and volunteers to hear first-hand about the challenges these children face – and the difference that Family Action’s support makes.
The charity works with families where children and young people take on caring roles for relatives with mental or physical illnesses, disabilities, or difficulties with drugs or alcohol.
By partnering closely with local services, Family Action helps reduce the burden on young carers, improve family life, and ensure these children receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Tom said:
"Young carers shoulder responsibilities that would challenge many adults, yet too often their efforts go unseen. They deserve proper support to take a break and enjoy simply being young.
"Joining Family Action Leeds Young Carers Support Service for a day and seeing the difference it makes was hugely encouraging – but it is deeply concerning that similar support isn’t available to young carers in Harrogate and Knaresborough.
"I will keep pushing for investment in local services so young carers here have a reliable support network to turn to, and the recognition they deserve for the incredible contribution they make every day."
Tom praised the organisation for its work but highlighted the lack of similar support in Harrogate and Knaresborough.
Since his election, he has been contacted by numerous constituents about the shortage of youth groups and services for young carers, with some vital services – described as a ‘lifeline’ for families – having closed due to council funding cuts.
Recognising the critical role these services play in giving young people a chance to share experiences and take a break from caring responsibilities, Tom is urging the Council to invest in proper support for young carers, ensuring there is a reliable local service they can turn to.
