Harrogate hospital shortlisted for two national awards

Cygnet Hospital Harrogate.

A care provider which runs Cygnet Hospital Harrogate has been shortlisted in two categories at this year’s HealthInvestor Awards.

Cygnet has been named a finalist for Complex Care Provider of the Year – Large Group and Specialist Services Provider of the Year.

The independent healthcare provider operates Cygnet Hospital Harrogate, a 36-bed mental health hospital that provides an emergency admissions service across two acute wards.

The recognition follows one of the most significant periods of investment and transformation in the organisation’s history.

In 2024/25, Cygnet completed a £132 million, two-year expansion programme, one of the largest single private investments in UK mental health infrastructure in recent years.

The programme saw:

  • Seven brand-new, purpose-built hospitals opened, providing 230 new specialist beds.
  • Four specialist social care acquisitions, welcoming 11 new homes and 181 new beds.
  • 181 existing beds refurbished, modernising environments across the estate.
  • 1,000+ new roles created to support expanded services.

Across 167 services, Cygnet treated nearly 9,000 patients and clinical outcomes remain sector-leading:

  • 100% successful discharges towards the community from PICU, Acute and Eating Disorder services.
  • 95% of adult patients and 93% of CAMHS patients successfully discharged towards community-based care.
  • 17% reduction in average length of stay
  • 84% of services rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, 17% higher than the national average, with zero inadequate ratings.
  • Cygnet’s central Bed Hub continues to improve crisis access, with more than 75% of referrals responded to in under 30 minutes over the past six months.

Cygnet’s growth has been underpinned by a clear focus on workforce stability and culture. Agency reliance has reduced significantly from 12.1% in 2023 to 5.3% in 2025, while staff turnover has fallen from 27.4% to 17% over the same period, strengthening continuity of care for patients.

The organisation’s annual staff survey saw almost 80% of colleagues respond, with 91% saying the care of service users is Cygnet’s top priority, 88% confirmed they enjoy working for Cygnet and 85% said they are proud to work for the organisation.

Additionally, service user feedback continues to demonstrate high levels of satisfaction and engagement as discharge surveys show an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 for care, support and treatment and many individuals in Cygnet’s care describe Cygnet environments as “more like hotels than hospitals”.

Stephen Firn, CEO of Cygnet Health Care, said:

“To be shortlisted in two categories at the HealthInvestor Awards is a tremendous honour and recognition of the extraordinary commitment shown by our colleagues.

“Over the past two years, we have made a bold investment in increasing mental health capacity across the UK, while ensuring quality, safety and patient experience remain at the heart of everything we do.

“Cygnet has proven that rapid, values-led expansion can deliver measurable patient outcomes, sustainable staffing, and resilient capacity for the NHS at scale. We are proud that our excellence and commitment to helping the NHS has been recognised through this shortlisting.”

Gareth Williams, CEO of Cygnet Social Care, added:

“This shortlisting reflects the scale of our ambition and the impact of our teams across both health and social care.

“As we continue to grow as an organisation, we remain focused on delivering person-centred, co-produced services that empower individuals.

“Cygnet has proven that through bold investment and value-based care, we are an essential partner working in collaboration with the NHS.”

The HealthInvestor Awards celebrate excellence across the independent healthcare sector, recognising organisations that demonstrate innovation, quality and measurable impact.

Winners will be announced on 9th June at an awards ceremony in London.
