Two Harrogate men are nearing the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a huge fundraising challenge.
57-year-old Steve McCready and 51-year-old Pete Gawtry have now arrived at Lava Tower - a 300-foot tall rock structure which is 15,000 feet up Mount Kilimanjaro.
The duo are aiming to raise £19,340, a £1 for every vertical foot they will climb, for Harrogate Neighbours - a charity which supports older and vulnerable people.
In an update sent to the charity, Steve said:
"Me, Pete and the gang reached Lava Tower. We have two camps to go before we go for the summit.
“This is the hardest thing I have ever done. The signal is poor so not sure on the next post.”
The pair have raised just under £5,000 so far.
They chose to fundraise for Harrogate Neighbours, a charity they both volunteer for and admire.
Steve said:
“I lost my mum last year – she was the matriarch to our large family and her absence has been really felt – particularly over the Christmas period.
“Harrogate Neighbours move mountains for people like my mum and Pete’s dad everyday and we hope to make lots of money for such a worthy cause.”
Good friends, Steve and Pete have trained rigorously together for months, preparing themselves for the physical and mental challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Harrogate Neighbours CEO Sue Cawthray said:
She said:
“We are incredibly moved by Pete and Steve's support, dedication and bravery.
“Their journey will not only honour their parents but also bring much-needed funds to help us deliver our services to the people we care for within the community.”
