Harrogate Fundraiser to share story of 9,000-mile unsupported bike ride to the himalayas

Thorsten will share his incredible story in Harrogate on 13th May at Roosters Taproom

When Harrogate resident Thorsten Bruce set off on his new touring bicycle last spring, he wasn’t setting out to break records, rather to raise funds for charity and to avoid regretting never having tried.

Thorsten is now set to share his incredible story on 13th May at Rooster's Taproom in Harrogate, with an evening of reflection and story telling.

Running has always been Thorsten’s main hobby. In fact, before departing for the Himalayas, he had ridden his new bike only about a dozen times.

Despite having far more experience pounding pavements than turning pedals, he committed to learning on the road — and embracing the unknown.

Over the next eight months, Thorsten cycled 9,000 unsupported miles across 20 countries all the way to the Himalayas.

The self-funded journey raised more than £20,000 for YoungMinds, a UK charity that fights for children and young people’s mental health, and Rainbow Children's Home, a Nepal-based orphanage he has supported for over 15 years and was the final destination of his ride.

Setting off in March 2025, Thorsten pedalled through Europe, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, China, Pakistan, India and Nepal, crossing deserts, high mountain passes, tracing a physically demanding route that included two of the highest and most remote roads in the world, the Pamir Highway and the Karakoram Highway.

Along the way, he climbed 350,000 feet - roughly the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest twelve times.

Reflecting on the journey, Thorsten said:

“The real gift of the journey wasn’t reaching the Himalayas. It was discovering that fulfilment comes when you give yourself to something bigger than yourself.”

Along the way, he encountered unexpected generosity from strangers who offered food, shelter and encouragement yet expected nothing in return.

He added:

“Their kindness reinforced a powerful truth: a meaningful life isn’t built on comfort or achievement alone, but on contribution.

"The world is kinder than you’re told – and you are capable of more than you think.”

A magical moment in the odyssey came in northern India, where he had the honour of meeting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, a profound and surreal moment near the end of his transcontinental ride.

Thorsten daid:

“Even more magical, was when my wife joined me for the final weeks of my ride. I hadn’t seen her in months!”

Now back in Harrogate, Thorsten plans to share the story of his journey, not as a tale of athletic achievement, but as a reflection on resilience and the power of taking action.

"Courage isn’t the absence of fear — if there was no fear, it wouldn’t be courage,

“You’re never truly ready for something like this. You just have to take the first step.”

To share these insights, Thorsten is hosting a community event:
